Everybody knows why the Americans celebrate Independence day, they commemorate the day when America got rid of the British domination, but throughout the years the celebration got many other overtones besides the political one and Independence Day is celebrated much like a festival with all the party ingredients: sports events, parades, picnics, outings and so on and at the end fireworks.
