Miami is an important port city on the Atlantic Coast of south Florida in the United States. As per the US Census Bureau, Miami’s metro area is the eighth-most populous and fourth largest urban area in the US, with a population of about 5.5 million.

Miami is not just about sun-kissed beaches, but is also a major center of finance, commerce, culture, media, entertainment, the arts, and international trade. In 2010, Miami was ranked seventh in the United States and 33rd among global cities in terms of business activity, human capital, information exchange, cultural experience, and political engagement.

Forbes magazine called out Miami to be "America's Cleanest City" in 2008. The city’s continued diligence towards maintaining good air quality, vast green spaces, clean drinking water, clean streets, and significant recycling programs. Miami has also earned the moniker of the "Capital of Latin America being the largest city with a Cuban-American plurality. Miami is the home of Spanglish, if not unadulterated Spanish. It also happens to be an international melting pot where you can easily French, Italian, and Russian. Don’t get intimidated though as people are very helpful and a smile would go a long way.

Things to do in Miami

Many tourists don't know that Miami and Miami Beach are really separate cities. While Miami, on the mainland, happens to be South Florida's commercial center. On the other hand, Miami Beach situated on the 17 islands in Biscayne Bay, is well considered to be America's Riviera. It has warm sunshine, sandy beaches and a vibrant nightlife. In addition to celebrated attractions like Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road, the less reported spots like the flourishing Design District in Miami, the extraordinary buildings of Coral Gables, and the secluded beaches of Key Biscayne are well kept secrets.

How to Travel to Miami

Miami’s major airport is the Miami International Airport (MIA) that is located about five miles north of Downtown and 13 miles west of Miami Beach. MIA can be quite overwhelming standing at 7.5 million square feet with 127 gates! MIA has an average footfall of 40 million people every year and about 100,000 every day.

You could start your Miami experience at the airport itself. Terminal D is pretty much a mini Miami. You can browse through popular destinations before you even leave the airport - like Ice Box Café, Café Versailles and Books & Books, to name a few. You could have a look at the collection of art and installation work throughout the airport, which falls under the Art In Public Places capital improvement program.

Travelling to the city from the airport is also quite easy. Just follow the signs to ground transportation and locate a taxi line. Taxis will charge a flat rate of $32 to South Beach and $21.70 to downtown.
If you want a pocket-friendly option, Super Shuttle (305-871-2000) shared ride vans is a good option. They would charge you a rate of $20 per person to South Beach and $15 to downtown. Rental cars are also available with most rental car companies (e.g., Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz) having offices at MIA.
However, before you book a cab, be sure to check with your hotel if they are providing complimentary shuttles.

There is also a network of public transportation that you can very well avail. The Airport Flyer is an express bus that runs between MIA, Metrorail, and Miami Beach for only $2.35. You could get one every half hour from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

You also have the Tri-Rail commuter train which goes to various locations in Broward and Palm Beach Counties, including Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale.
While in Miami the best bet would be to navigate by foot, on taxi or on CitiBikes. CitiBikes is a one-way bike rental system available throughout Miami.

What is the climate like in Miami

Miami has a tropical monsoon climate with hot and humid summers and short winters. The wet season begins during May and continues well through October. This is the time when the city witnesses thunderstorms and even hurricanes.

As a tourist the best bet would be to pack lots of beach clothes and definitely a good sun block. For the cooler months, it would be a good idea to carry a light jacket.

Best Time to Visit Miami

You could visit Miami around the year. However, the lovely sunny beaches are best enjoyed between March and May. One advantage of a spring visit is that you get to avoid the peak winter rates.
Winter is also a popular time as the city is packed with tourists. January through February has a cool and dry weather which also brings out another side of the beautiful city.
